Airtel Moves From Per-minute to Per-Second

Posted on: 22/Sep/2015 5:59:32 PM
Mobile companies seem to have got bothered about the seriousness shown by the government in the issue of severe call drops. The biggest mobile operator in India, Airtel has made a move to make a shift in its prepaid user base to a better billing system per-second billing system while it has received orders from the government that an audit of tariff plans of all telecom companies need to be checked for any undue gains reaped out of call drops. Amidst these, TRAI has sought out for compensation structures for all customers.

This move by Airtel is likely to be replicated by other mobile operators as well though most other companies are currently saying that they are still in look out for options.

Comparing per-minute and per-second billing options, the latter is more effective to manage call drops as the customers are changed only for the actual usage for making calls. In case of per-minute billing, a customer will be charged for 4 minutes even if the actual call duration is just 3 minutes and 15 seconds. This is not the case with per-second billing as it precisely charges only for the exact number of seconds for which the call is made.

As per the statement by Bharti Airtel, all its prepaid customers will be transferred to an affordable per-second bill plan. This initiative is termed Pay for what you use and this is believed to be of help for all its customers to pay only for what is used by Airtel customers.

Government is so ardent that it will never tolerate with call drops anymore and that serious steps such as charging penalty will be initiated.
