The state government of Tamil Nadu has announced a new facility for the unorganized and migrant workers.
A toll-free telephone (number) will be installed where grievances/complaints can be made. Facilities will be provided for online registration and renewal of membership for the unorganized workers with welfare boards.
Ms. R. Geetha of Unorganized Workers` federation, exchanged some news about the prevailing situation.
As 50% of the construction workers are migrants from other districts and states, they find it difficult to register. The registration procedure requires verification. For this, VAOs (Village Administration Officers) ask for local ration cards which the migrant workers cannot provide. So the trade Unions must be authorized to verify this and certify the migrant workers especially.
It is worth noting here that in the neighboring states like Kerala & Puducherry; almost 90% of the workers renew their membership as they get benefits.
Also, there is no monsoon allowance in Tamil Nadu. In Puducherry, they get a coupon with which they can purchase provisions or clothes.
Hence, state government should consider providing medical facilities for the workers by tying up with the Employees State Insurance Scheme. Medical coverage would go a long way.
Mr. Y. Aruldoss of Unorganized Workers` federation shared that that applications of workers seeking pension have been pending with various welfare boards for over four years now. Both the DMK and AIADMK have not done anything for unorganized workers.
