A penalty of Rs 10.80 crore was imposed on telecom service providers by the government. This penalty is charged for violating the allowed limits of radiation from mobile towers as of 31st of May this year.
It was Bharti Airtel that was imposed with the highest amount of penalty of Rs 2.15 crore. Vodafone stands next with a penalty of Rs 1.80, said Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
As of 31st of May 2015, about 908353 Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) are set up in mobile towers across the country. These are told to exceed the allowed radiation limits as set up by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Prasad added that the penalty for violating the actual EMF radiation is increased from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per BTS per incidence. The required instruction for the same were issued on 30th of January 2013.
The Telecom Enforcement Resource & Monitoring (TERM) field units of DoT ensured proper compliance to the limits of EMF radiations by performing extensive audits of self certificates.
A penalty of Rs 10 lakh was imposed on those BTS sites that violate the prescribed EMF norms.
