The Union Ministry for External Affairs has announced that police verification is not needed for re issue of passports. This will reduce considerably the delay of that applicants have been facing. The Union External Affairs Minister V.K. Singh said that as long as the passport was first issued on the basis of a clear police report, it can be reissued without the additional verification.
Speaking about this, Mr. Singh said, As per existing provisions, minors, government servants and senior citizens (65 years and above) are exempted from police verification subject to certain conditions... No proposal under consideration to discontinue Tatkaal system for issuing passports for urgent travel needs... It is a fact that with the overall improvement in delivery of passport services, the incidence of Tatkaal passport is coming down progressively from 11 per cent in 2012-13 to six per cent in 2014-15... However, there is no proposal to discontinue Tatkaal system, as it serves the purpose of issuing passports for urgent travel needs.
The Union Home Ministry will also start a project that will enable country wide police verification. This process will reduce the period between application for passport and issuance of the same to a week, as against a month.
