The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMAI) has released a report along with KPMG about the status of mobile internet users in the country. According to the report, non metro cities and other rural areas will be the key drivers of the Digital India movement.
The report says that in June 2015, he overall internet base in the country was approximately 350 million. The base included wireline and wireless connections. This figure is estimated to be 503 million by 2017. There will be a 27.8 per cent growth annually in internet mobile users. Also, there is considerable growth in the 3G market. This market is expected to grow 61.3 per cent by 2017.
According to an IMAI official, �As of 2014, the Active Internet User (AIU) base in rural India was 6.7 per cent of the overall rural population of 905 million and accounted for 61 million users. Of this 4.4 per cent used a mobile device to access the Internet; a figure that stood at a meagre 0.4 per cent in 2012.�
