The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued a 7-day weather forecast for Tamil Nadu, warning of heavy rainfall in parts of the state due to a weak trough prevailing over the coastal region. Several districts are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days.

Heavy Rain Forecast for August 1, 2026

On August 1, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the hill regions of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Theni districts, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h.

Heavy rainfall is also expected in the hill areas of Tiruppur and isolated places in Dindigul district.

Meanwhile, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, and Erode are likely to receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning. Similar weather conditions are expected across Puducherry and Karaikal, while the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu may witness isolated light showers.

Rainfall Outlook for the Next Week

According to the weather department:

August 2–3: Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected over the Western Ghats districts, North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

August 4: Light to moderate rainfall is likely over the Western Ghats and North Coastal districts, with light rain expected in other parts of Tamil Nadu.

August 5–7: Moderate rainfall is expected over the Western Ghats, while isolated light rain may continue across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Chennai Weather Forecast

For August 1 and August 2, Chennai is expected to experience partly cloudy skies. Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are likely to occur in a few parts of the city during the evening or night hours.

Minimum Temperature: 27°C to 28°C

Temperature Outlook

The weather department has stated that maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may decrease by up to 2°C on August 1. From August 2 to August 5, no significant change in daytime temperatures is expected.

Fishermen Warning

Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution as strong winds are expected over the sea.

August 1–2: Winds of 40–50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h, are likely over the South Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining Kumari Sea.
August 3–5: Wind speeds may increase to 45–55 km/h, with gusts reaching 65 km/h over the Kumari Sea.

Authorities have advised fishermen to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins before venturing into the sea.
