Cyclone Formation Expected Over Bay of Bengal by December 2; Detailed Weather and Safety Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the likelihood of a cyclone forming over the Bay of Bengal around December 2, 2023. The current low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal is now identified as a well-marked Low Pressure system, according to the IMD`s Wednesday update.

The IMD forecasts the system to move west-northwestwards, potentially intensifying into a Depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 30, 2023. Subsequently, it may further intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over Southwest and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal within the following 48 hours.

In response to this forecast, the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued warnings for fishermen, urging them not to venture into the sea. The SRC emphasized that squally wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are expected over the central Bay of Bengal and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal from December 1, 2023. This is anticipated to increase to 50 to 60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, on December 2. The sea condition is also expected to be rough to very rough.

Fishermen Warning:

The SRC has advised fishermen in the central Bay of Bengal not to venture into deep sea areas starting from the morning of December 1. Those already at sea are strongly advised to return to the coast by December 1. The fisheries department has been directed to communicate warning and alert messages to fishermen, while the F & ARD Dept. is tasked with providing information on the status of fishermen and boats at sea, along with details of boats and fishermen who have returned.

IMD Weather Warnings:

1. Rainfall Warning:
- Light to moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall, is likely over the Nicobar Islands during November 29 to December 1. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on November 29.
- Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated over most places in the Andaman Islands on November 30.

2. Wind Warning:
- South Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Strong wind speeds reaching 25-35 kmph, gusting to 45 kmph, are expected over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining Andaman & Nicobar Islands on November 29.
- Southeast Bay of Bengal: Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, is likely over Southeast Bay of Bengal on November 30. This is expected to increase to 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, on December 1, with Gale Wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph, on December 2.
