Is It the Right Time to Buy Gold? Motilal Oswal Advises Against Lump-Sum Investments

Gold has delivered strong returns for investors over the past few years. However, according to Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL), investors may need to adopt a more disciplined approach rather than investing a large amount at once.

The brokerage firm recommends avoiding lump-sum investments during market rallies and instead investing gradually through a staggered strategy.

Gold May See a Short-Term Correction

According to MOFSL, gold prices could initially decline by 6% to 8% from current levels before resuming their upward trend. The brokerage expects the correction to create a better buying opportunity for long-term investors.

For Indian investors, MOFSL identifies the ₹1.30 lakh to ₹1.33 lakh per 10 grams range as an attractive accumulation zone. Over the medium term, it expects gold to reach ₹1.68 lakh per 10 grams, with a longer-term target of ₹1.93 lakh per 10 grams over the next 12 to 15 months.

Gold Prices Are Influenced by More Than Geopolitics

The brokerage notes that gold prices are no longer driven solely by geopolitical tensions. Several macroeconomic factors now play a crucial role, including:

- US inflation.

- Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.

- Real interest rates (real yields).

- Global liquidity.

- Central bank gold purchases.

- Gold ETF investment flows.

Investors should closely monitor these factors before making investment decisions.

Why Interest Rates Matter

Unlike fixed deposits or bonds, gold does not generate regular income. As a result, changes in interest rates have a significant impact on gold prices.

When real interest rates rise, investors often shift toward income-generating assets, putting pressure on gold prices. Conversely, expectations of interest rate cuts tend to increase demand for gold, supporting higher prices.

Silver Outlook Remains Different

MOFSL highlights that silver behaves differently from gold because it serves both as an investment asset and an industrial metal.

Silver is widely used in industries such as:

- Electronics.

- Renewable energy.

- Electrical equipment.

Because of its industrial demand, silver prices are generally more volatile and are influenced by global economic growth, industrial activity, investor demand, and interest rate movements.

Investment Strategy

Motilal Oswal belieieves that gold and silver remain valuable long-term portfolio diversification assets. However, investors should avoid chasing short-term price movements and instead follow a disciplined, phased investment strategy.

The brokerage advises investors to remain focused on long-term wealth creation while closely tracking inflation, interest rates, Federal Reserve policy decisions, central bank purchases, and global investment flows before making investment decisions.
