How about studying for just 3 years in a college for a degree and receiving 2 degrees after the completion of course!! Sounds unimaginable right?
Soon, studying dual degrees could become a reality for the Madras University students. The University of Madras or Madras University or MU is having plans to start dual degree programmes. By this, the arts and sciences students would be able to pursue 2 degrees at the same time. From the academic year 2025-26 onwards, the students studying in the regular mode would be able to study one more degree through Open and Distant Learning or ODL mode.
As per the draft guidelines for dual degrees prepared by MU it is clear that those students who are studying in distance mode would be allowed to join 2 distance mode programmes simultaneously. On Monday, the syndicate meeting of MU would be held and at this meeting draft guidelines would be placed for approval. The guidelines further mentioned that the dual degree would be mentioned in the degree certificate. Before the start of the admission, there would be orientation for the students.
It must be noted that the dual degree featured as one of the suggestions in NEP 2020. It was later brought to light by some professors that the dual degree would benefit the students studying arts, sciences and commerce etc. The skills of these students would increase due to their dual degrees.
It is known that getting admissions to B. Com in Chennai colleges has become a huge issue for many students now. The reason is that many students get high marks and the competition is very tough.
It is now revealed that through the dual degree a student studying BA Economics could enrol themselves in B.Com in distance mode and study 2 degrees simultaneously.
Point is that students who have joined professional degrees due to peer pressure could join arts degrees of their choice also under the dual degree programme.
It was revealed by former MU vice-chancellor Mr. P. Duraiwamy that getting BCA or BBM degrees (through dual degree programmes) would be valuable for the students who study arts and science courses.
