Central Ground Water Board or CGWB monitored as many as 528 wells present in TN. Information collected is 60 percent or 318 wells have shown fall in the water levels. This was informed by the centre to the Lok Sabha on Thursday. One important piece of news is in the neighbouring Puducherry, three out of 5 wells monitored showed rise in the water levels.

Many reasons have been cited for the decline in the groundwater levels in various parts of India. The reasons are rising demand for fresh water for different purposes, the vagaries of rainfall, rising population, industrialization and urbanization etc. This was as per union minister for Jal Shakti Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Pre monsoon water level data for 2018 has been compared with the decadal (2008 to 2017) average water level. The objective was to assess the declining or rising trend in the water levels on long term basis. In various states in India, CGWB is involved in the groundwater monitoring work for 4 times in a year. In about 52% of wells being monitored, the analysis of the data showed decline in the groundwater levels. Larger depletion in the groundwater levels has been witnessed in states like Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, HP, J & K, Punjab, TN, UP, Uttarakhand etc.

Minister Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat spoke about how water was a state subject. He added that the efforts to conserve and manage groundwater were the responsibility of the state. He pointed out that many states have done notable work in the area.
