IIT Madras, UNESCO MGIEP Partner to Develop AI-Powered Learning Technologies

IIT Madras and the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (UNESCO MGIEP) have joined hands to develop AI-powered learning technologies that integrate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into mainstream education.

Under the partnership, UNESCO MGIEP will provide expertise in SEL, while IIT Madras will contribute its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), Extended Reality (XR), game design and immersive technologies.

The initiative will focus on developing open-source digital learning tools to make education more interactive, personalised and learner-centric. The proposed AI tool will analyse existing curricula and create personalised learning pathways that include SEL.

The technology will also help teachers incorporate SEL into lesson plans, classroom activities and assessments. The partners said low-cost, low-bandwidth solutions could further improve access to digital learning.

The collaboration will also include joint research, workshops, seminars and faculty and researcher exchanges, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4.7 on inclusive and sustainable education.
