Income Tax Day 2026: Celebrating India's Tax System and Key Reforms

Income Tax Day is observed every year on July 24 to commemorate the introduction of income tax in India in 1860 by Sir James Wilson. The occasion highlights the evolution of the country`s tax administration and the government`s efforts to build a transparent, technology-driven, and taxpayer-friendly system.

A Brief History

India`s modern taxation framework was strengthened with the Income-tax Act, 1922, which formalised the administration of income tax. The Central Board of Revenue Act, 1924 further established a statutory body to oversee tax administration.

The system underwent significant technological transformation over the years, beginning with computerisation in 1981 and the establishment of the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru in 2009, enabling faster and more efficient processing of income tax returns.

Major Tax Reforms

The Income Tax Act, 2025, which came into effect on April 1, 2026, introduced the concept of the Tax Year, replacing the earlier terms Assessment Year and Previous Year.

Other key reforms include:

- Exemption of income tax on interest awarded by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal to individuals.

- Reduction of Tax Collected at Source (TCS) to 2% on overseas tour packages.

- Reduction of TCS to 2% for education and medical remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS).

- Introduction of a rule-based automated system for obtaining lower or nil TDS deduction certificates.

- Single-window filing of Forms 15G and 15H through depositories.

- Extension of the deadline for filing revised income tax returns until March 31 with a nominal fee.

- Simplified compliance for property transactions involving Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) through a PAN-based system.

- A one-time six-month foreign asset disclosure scheme for eligible small taxpayers.

Simplified Penalty Framework

The government has also proposed several measures to reduce litigation and simplify tax administration, including:

- Integration of assessment and penalty proceedings into a single order.

- Allowing taxpayers to update returns even after reassessment proceedings by paying an additional tax.

- Eligibility for immunity from penalties in certain cases upon payment of additioional tax.

- Decriminalisation of selected procedural offences, including non-production of certain records.

- Immunity from prosecution for non-disclosure of certain foreign assets valued below ₹20 lakh.

Why Income Tax Matters

Income tax plays a vital role in funding healthcare, education, infrastructure, public welfare, and national security. It also supports economic development, promotes equitable wealth distribution, strengthens governance, and helps build a sustainable economy.

Digital Transformation

India`s income tax system has embraced digital technology through initiatives such as:

- Permanent Account Number (PAN) and PAN-Aadhaar linkage.

- Annual Information Statement (AIS), which provides taxpayers with a consolidated view of their financial transactions and helps pre-fill income tax returns.

- Online e-Verification mechanisms that minimise paperwork and speed up compliance.

The Income Tax Department has also adopted the NUDGE (Non-Intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable Taxpayers) approach, encouraging voluntary compliance by using behavioural insights and technology while reducing unnecessary scrutiny.

Income Tax Day recognises the contribution of taxpayers and tax officials in building a stronger economy while reaffirming the importance of a modern, transparent, and citizen-centric tax system.
