In a significant development, power demand in Tamil Nadu has touched a new peak for the third time this month, reaching 21,211 megawatts (MW) in a single day, according to electricity board officials.
The sharp rise in demand is attributed to the intense summer heat sweeping across the state. With temperatures soaring, the usage of electric fans during the day and air conditioners at night has increased significantly, pushing electricity consumption to record levels.
Key Highlights:
- Power demand peaked at 21,211 MW, the highest recorded this month
- Previous peaks:
21,010 MW on April 17
21,051 MW on April 22
- Daily average demand: around 16,000 MW
- Summer demand typically crosses 20,000 MW
Electricity consumption has also surged to new highs. After recording 462.66 million units on April 18 and 466.16 million units on April 23, consumption touched a fresh peak of 470.67 million units recently.
Summer Heat Driving Demand Surge
The early onset of extreme heat has led to continuous usage of cooling appliances across households and commercial spaces. Although the peak summer period, known locally as Agni Nakshatram (Kathiri Veyil), is expected to begin in early May, demand has already spiked in April itself.
Solar Power Helps Meet Demand
Officials stated that despite the surge in electricity demand, supply has remained stable. Increased solar power generation during daytime has played a crucial role in meeting the rising demand. In fact, total power generation exceeded demand on the peak day, ensuring uninterrupted supply.
With peak summer yet to begin, electricity demand in Tamil Nadu is expected to rise further in the coming weeks.
