West Asia Tensions Cause Flight Delays at Chennai Airport; SriLankan Airlines Cancels Two Services

Escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia disrupted international flight operations at Chennai International Airport on Tuesday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded due to significant delays and flight cancellations.

Temporary airspace restrictions and enhanced security measures across parts of the Gulf region, including Bahrain and Kuwait, affected several international flight routes. As a result, around 10 inbound flights from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Bahrain, Muscat, London, and Singapore arrived behind schedule.

Similarly, 10 outbound international flights from Chennai to these destinations departed with delays ranging from 30 minutes to nearly three hours, causing inconvenience to travellers.

SriLankan Airlines also cancelled two scheduled services—the Colombo–Chennai flight that was due to arrive at 3:00 p.m. and the Chennai–Colombo flight scheduled to depart at 4:00 p.m.

Passengers at Chennai International Airport expressed frustration over the lack of timely communication regarding the delays and cancellations. They noted that airport authorities typically issue advance alerts and post regular updates on social media, allowing travellers to coordinate with airlines and revise their travel plans.

However, passengers said no such updates were provided on Tuesday, forcing many to wait at the airport for several hours without clear information about their flight status. The disruptions highlight the wider impact of the ongoing geopolitical situation in West Asia on international air travel, with airlines continuing to monitor developments and adjust operations as necessary.
