Narayanapuram Lake May Soon Get Tourist Boating Facility, Says Minister N. Anand

The Tamil Nadu government is considering introducing a tourist boating facility at Narayanapuram Lake in Pallikaranai as part of its lake restoration and public recreation initiatives. Rural Development and Water Resources Minister N. Anand said the proposal would be discussed with Chief Minister Vijay, and the project would be taken forward based on his approval.

Following the Chief Minister`s directions, the minister has been inspecting desilting and restoration works at lakes and water bodies across Chennai and its surrounding areas over the past few days.

Narayanapuram Lake Restoration Underway

On Wednesday, Minister N. Anand launched the desilting and restoration work at Narayanapuram Lake in Pallikaranai and inspected the site using heavy earthmoving machinery.

Officials said the lake, which lies within the Chennai Corporation limits, is currently covered with water hyacinth, floating vegetation, and waste materials that obstruct the natural flow of water. If these blockages are not removed before the northeast monsoon, the surrounding residential areas could face flooding, as witnessed during previous rainy seasons.

The minister instructed officials to complete the restoration work before the onset of the monsoon to improve water flow and minimise the risk of flooding.

Proposal for Tourist Boating

During the inspection, the minister also reviewed plans to develop the lake into a public recreation destination. As part of the proposal, a tourist boating facility is being considered to make better use of the restored water body and enhance public access.

He said the proposal would be placed before the Chief Minister, and further action would be taken after receiving the necessary approval.

Desilting Work Begins at Velachery Lake

The minister later visited Velachery Lake, where desilting operations were also launched. The restoration work includes removing water hyacinth, floating debris, and accumulated waste to ensure smooth drainage during the monsoon season.

Officials have been directed to complete the work on schedule so that both lakes are fully prepared before heavy rains begin, helping reduce flood risks and improve water management in the region.
