Why Are Newly Married Couples Traditionally Asked to Stay Apart During Aadi?

In many Tamil families, newly married couples are traditionally encouraged to stay apart during the Tamil month of Aadi. This custom is based on practical and seasonal considerations rather than religious restrictions.

If a pregnancy begins during Aadi (mid-July to mid-August), the baby is likely to be born during April or May, when temperatures are typically at their highest in many parts of South India.

Traditionally, it was believed that the peak summer season was less favourable for childbirth and newborn care, especially in earlier times when access to modern healthcare and cooling facilities was limited. As a result, families followed the custom of keeping newly married couples apart during Aadi to avoid childbirth during the hottest months of the year.

While the tradition continues to be observed in some households as a cultural practice, it is largely rooted in historical lifestyle and seasonal considerations.
