Chennai to Set Up Green Shade Canopies at 40 Traffic Junctions to Tackle Summer Heat
With summer heat intensifying across the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation has announced a new initiative to provide relief to motorists by installing green shade canopies at major traffic junctions.
As temperatures continue to rise, commuters-especially two-wheeler riders—are facing difficulties while waiting at traffic signals under direct sunlight. To address this issue, the corporation has planned to install shade structures that help reduce heat exposure.
Under this project, a total of 40 key traffic intersections have been identified across Chennai. Officials confirmed that green shade canopies have already been installed at 8 locations, while work at the remaining junctions is in progress.
The canopies are made using green shade cloth, which helps block harsh sunlight while allowing ventilation. This ensures better comfort for motorists waiting at signals during peak daytime hours.
Major locations covered under this initiative include Vyasarpadi Junction, Moolakadai Junction, Rajaji Salai, Basin Bridge Road, EVR Periyar Salai near Ripon Building, and Anna Salai, among other busy roads in the city.
The primary aim of this initiative is to protect commuters from extreme heat, reduce discomfort, and improve road safety. It is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, delivery personnel, and two-wheeler riders.
This move reflects Chennai’s growing focus on climate-responsive urban planning and public welfare, especially during extreme weather conditions.
