Chennai Metro Adds 55 New Escalators Across Phase I and Extension Stations
Chennai Metro Rail Limited has enhanced passenger convenience by installing 55 new escalators across 27 Phase I and extension metro stations in Chennai. The latest infrastructure upgrade aims to improve accessibility, reduce passenger congestion, and provide smoother movement within metro stations.
With the addition of the new escalators, the total number of escalators across the Chennai Metro Phase I network has increased from 226 to 281. The move comes in response to growing passenger demand for better facilities at busy metro stations.
Chennai Metro Stations With New Escalators
Five escalators each were installed at:
- Tirumangalam Metro Station
- Anna Nagar East Metro Station
Four escalators were added at:
- Vadapalani Metro Station
Three escalators each were installed at:
- Thousand Lights Metro Station
- Anna Nagar Tower Metro Station
- Government Estate Metro Station
Additional escalators were also added at major stations including:
Guindy Metro Station
Airport Metro Station
Egmore Metro Station
LIC Metro Station
St Thomas Mount Metro Station
According to CMRL officials, the installation process was challenging as most of the work had to be completed during non-revenue hours without affecting daily metro operations and passenger accessibility.
The latest Chennai Metro infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly improve commuter experience, especially during peak travel hours, by providing faster and safer movement across stations.
