Chennai Weather Today: Cloudy Skies with Light Rain Expected Tonight

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cloudy skies over Chennai and its suburbs today, with light rain accompanied by thunderstorms likely in isolated parts of the city during the evening and night.

According to the weather department, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over South Interior Karnataka at an altitude of 5.8 km. Another upper-air cyclonic circulation extends from 5.8 km to 7.6 km over South Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, creating favourable conditions for rainfall.

In addition, a weak trough in the lower atmosphere remains over the North Tamil Nadu coastal region, enhancing the possibility of rain across several parts of the state.

The IMD has predicted moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, and Madurai, as well as in Puducherry and Karaikal.

For Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy throughout the day, while light rain with thunderstorms may occur in a few areas during the evening and nighttime.

The weather department has also warned that strong winds reaching up to 60 kmph may prevail over parts of the Kanyakumari Sea until August 8, advising fishermen and those engaged in marine activities to exercise caution.
