Radha Nagar Railway Subway in Chromepet to Open on January 7, Ending Decades-Long Traffic Woes

Posted on: 02/Jan/2026 10:06:14 AM

The long-pending Radha Nagar railway subway project at LC-27 in Chromepet has reached its final stage and will be opened to the public on January 7 by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

The Radha Nagar level crossing, used daily by over one lakh commuters, has been a major traffic bottleneck for decades, with frequent congestion and accidents on Radha Nagar Main Road and GST Road whenever the gates were closed.

Launched in 2010 during the DMK regime, the project remained stalled for nearly a decade. Work gained momentum after court intervention and was later expedited by the present government. The ₹17-crore project has now been completed.

The newly built 250-metre-long and seven-metre-wide subway includes a three-metre-wide pedestrian pathway, offering direct access to Chromepet railway station from both the eastern and western sides. For the first time, buses will be able to drop passengers close to the railway platform, allowing easy entry into the station.

Following objections over traffic congestion, Southern Railway has agreed to allow two-way traffic in the subway. To facilitate this, an additional 70-metre stretch of railway land has been acquired, and the GST Road bus stand is being shifted to allow smooth vehicle movement.

Residents have welcomed the development, calling it a long-awaited solution, and urged authorities to ensure smooth traffic flow and improved pedestrian access to the platforms.
