Planning to go abroad to study?
As per some educationists, there is now 30percent decrease in the number of students going abroad for studies from Chennai when compared to 2024.The reasons cited are visa restrictions, anti-immigration policies by the USA government and few job opportunities etc.
In 2025, many students preferred countries like Germany and Australia for their studies abroad due to visa restrictions in the USA. There are fewer applications to medical courses abroad in this year. The reason for that is due to delay in the admissions and new regulations introduced by the National Medical Commission. The new regulation mandated compulsory 12 month internship in the same institution after completing a medical degree.
According to Mr. Suresh Kumar, MD of Truematics Overseas Education Consultancy, there is a huge drop in the number of enquiries to the USA based universities in 2025. He added that the students who experienced visa rejections opted for Europe based universities. In 2024m this agency sent about 70 students to several countries for higher studies but the number reduced by 30% in 2025.
It was brought out by Mr. Srinivas Venkateswaran, director of Global Degrees Chennai that due to low interest in the USA in 2025 there is a dip of about 30percent in the number of students going abroad for higher studies. Information gathered is that the students opted for health sciences, law, hotel management, tourism, fashion design and arts courses apart from engineering and management studies. From 180 students sent by Chennai based Global Degrees to abroad in 2024, the number now is just 120.
The affordable cost to study medicine in countries like Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam etc has led to many students going to these countries. This was as per Mr. C. Ravichandran, MD of Study Abroad Educational Consultant.
