Chennai to Launch 100 Smart Traffic Signals from December 31
To ease traffic congestion in the city, Chennai is set to bring 100 smart traffic signals into operation from December 31. The project is being jointly implemented by the Chennai Metropolitan Traffic Police and the Chennai Integrated Metropolitan Transport Authority.
Despite the availability of public transport such as Metro Rail, suburban trains, and government buses, a large number of commuters continue to use cars and two-wheelers. Ongoing Metro Phase II works, flyover construction, and road repairs have further worsened traffic congestion, especially at signalised junctions.
The new smart signals will use cameras and real-time traffic data to automatically adjust signal timings based on vehicle and pedestrian movement. This will help reduce unnecessary waiting time at junctions, particularly when there is little or no traffic.
Trials conducted at locations such as Taylors Road, Chennai Central, and Pachaiyappa’s College have reportedly been successful. Officials said the system helps save time and fuel, while also reducing vehicle emissions.
Traffic police officials stated that the smart signals will significantly cut down delays at junctions, while environmentalists have welcomed the move as a step towards greener and more efficient urban mobility.
