Prime Minister Narendra Modi Flags Off India's First Hydrogen-Powered Train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India`s first hydrogen-powered train today, marking a significant milestone in the country`s efforts to promote cleaner and greener railway transportation.

The train has been developed using hydrogen fuel technology, offering a low-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains and supporting India`s commitment to environmentally sustainable public transport.

The project, undertaken at a cost of ₹140 crore for the Northern Railway, features coaches manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Following the successful completion of trial runs, the Railway Board approved the launch of the service earlier this year.

India`s first hydrogen-powered train will initially operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana as part of its phased rollout.

With eight passenger coaches and two pilot coaches, the train is expected to become the world`s longest hydrogen-powered passenger train.

Ahead of the launch, Prime Minister Modi said he looked forward to visiting Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab to participate in programmes related to railways, healthcare, culture, transport, and education. He added that these initiatives would have a positive impact on people`s lives, particularly the country`s youth.
