Tamil Nadu Records Highest-Ever Daily Electricity Consumption Amid Intense Heatwave

Tamil Nadu has recorded its highest-ever daily electricity consumption, with power usage touching 472.263 million units (MU) on Wednesday as the ongoing heatwave continued to drive demand across the State.

The latest figure surpassed the previous record of 471.456 MU, recorded on April 24, 2026, highlighting the sharp increase in electricity consumption during the prolonged spell of high temperatures.

The surge in power usage comes as several districts experienced extreme heat, with maximum temperatures crossing 40°C. Vellore recorded the highest temperature in the State at 41.6°C, while Madurai and Tiruttani also witnessed temperatures above 40°C.

In Chennai, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 39.4°C, making it the city`s highest July temperature since 2019.

Tamil Nadu`s peak power demand reached 21,520 MW on Wednesday, following the all-time high of 21,724 MW recorded on Tuesday. The continued rise in demand reflects increased electricity usage across residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

According to power sector officials, the prolonged heat has led to a significant increase in the use of air conditioners, fans and cooling appliances, resulting in record-breaking electricity consumption across the State.

The Tamil Nadu power sector continues to meet the increased demand while ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply despite the challenging weather conditions.
