University of Madras to Introduce Four New Sociology Diploma Courses Through Distance Education

The University of Madras is set to expand its distance education offerings by introducing four new diploma courses in Sociology through its Institute of Distance Education (IDE) from the 2027–28 academic year.

The decision follows the recommendations of the Board of Studies in Sociology and has been made in accordance with the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines for distance education.

Four New Diploma Courses

The proposed diploma programmes are:

- Diploma in Sociology for Competitive Examinations
- Diploma in Sociology of AI and Automation
- Diploma in Sociology of Family, Health and Counselling
- Diploma in Sociology of Planning and Sustainable Development
- Focus on Emerging Trends and Career Opportunities

The introduction of these courses aims to align the University`s distance education curriculum with emerging social developments, technological advancements, and evolving employment opportunities.

The Sociology of AI and Automation programme is designed to help students understand the social impact of artificial intelligence and automation, while the Sociology for Competitive Examinations course is expected to benefit candidates preparing for various government recruitment exams.

Meanwhile, the courses on Family, Health and Counselling and Planning and Sustainable Development will focus on contemporary social challenges, public policy, community welfare, and sustainable development.

Courses to Be Offered from 2027–28

Following the University`s approval process, all four diploma programmes will be offered through the Institute of Distance Education (IDE), University of Madras, beginning with the 2027–28 academic year.

The new courses are expected to provide students, working professionals, and competitive exam aspirants with flexible learning opportunities while strengthening the University`s distance education portfolio.
