Architect of modern burn care in India, Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan!!
On Monday, famous plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan aged 91 passed away in Chennai. It is worthy to note that her life was a testament to groundbreaking innovation and unwavering compassion.
She was born in 1934 and completed her MBBS degree at the popular MMC in Chennai. She was the best outgoing student and received 15 medals for her academic performance. Not many would be aware of the fact that she was the first ever to receive M. Ch in plastic surgery in the state of TN. Not only that, she even received a dual FRCS degree from the Royal Colleges of England and Edinburg.
The sensational piece of information is that Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan was the first responsible for establishment of the burns unit at KMC in Chennai. It is noteworthy that she retired from KMC as the head of the department for Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive surgery.
As a research scientist in collaboration with CLRI in Chennai, Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan played her role in developing an innovative collagen membrane for burn wound cover. It was a breakthrough that revolutionised wound management. Rest in peace doctor!!
