Chennai city to be bin-free in the future

Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is in the news again now. It is brought out that GCC has decided to create smaller composting yards in its parks, offices and in the vacant lands. The main purpose was to remove compactor bins from the streets plus to eradicate roadside dump yards.

Ability to process one to five tonnes of wet waste would be possible by each of these centers. The conservancy workers play a huge role in collecting the waste and segregating the waste at ward level. It is known that the civic body has got 200 composting sites now and the above mentioned works are done in these sites.

As per the commissioner of GCC, Mr. G. Prakash, the micro sites would be increased to ensure that roadside bins and waste collected are removed. He also spoke about the meetings that took place between the officials and him. He explained that the money got from Swachh Bharat Mission would be would be utilized to improve the infrastructure for primary collection and segregation of wastes.

Mr. Prakash finally spoke about how the aim was to remove the huge compactor bins and to replace them by smaller bins that could be easily removed or carried to another place. Already as many as 411 battery operated vehicles for waste collection have been purchased and the purpose was to intensify source segregation and improve the solid waste collection.

An engineer belonging to GCC revealed how another 2000 battery operated vehicles would also be purchased and how these vehicles would provide great dignity for the conservancy workers plus increase the collection process to a great extent. He explained how the waste would be transported to the nearest composting centers and how the wet waste would be transformed to manure. On Wednesdays only dry waste would be collected and this was confirmed by the engineer of GCC.

It is important to note that out of 5500 tonnes of waste collected, 25 % of waste was from malls, theaters etc. Civic activist, Mr. Gopalakrishnan, spoke about how the idea to remove the road side bins has been a failure since the year 2011.
