Chennai Dengue Prevention Drive: GCC Finds Mosquito Breeding Sources in 4,192 Houses

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has intensified dengue prevention and mosquito control activities across all 15 zones of Chennai. Between September 14 and 19, 2026, civic officials inspected more than 11 lakh houses and identified and removed mosquito breeding sources in 4,192 houses.

3,697 Workers Deployed for Mosquito Control

The Corporation has deployed 3,697 field workers for mosquito control and dengue prevention activities. Each worker visits around 80 to 100 houses every day to identify mosquito breeding spots, remove stagnant water and create awareness among residents.

GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran inspected fever surveillance activities in Bharathiyar Street and Sundarar Street near Erukkancheri Main Road in Tondiarpet Zone on Monday.

Fever Treatment Facilities Strengthened

The GCC has ensured adequate stocks of medicines for fever treatment at:

- 140 Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs)

- 16 Urban Community Health Centres (UCHCs)

- 200 Urban Health and Wellness Centres

Medical officers have also received training on dengue prevention, fever surveillance and patient management.

The Corporation is collecting information on fever cases from hospitals, clinics, laboratories, training centres, households and government health facilities to strengthen disease surveillance.

Patients discharged after treatment for fever are being monitored continuously for three days.

Mosquito Breeding Control Measures

Several measures are being implemented across Chennai to control mosquito breeding. Abate larvicide is being used in water tanks, while MLO oil is applied in canals and stormwater drains.

The GCC is also carrying out fogging operations in streets and residential areas to control adult mosquitoes.

Officials are inspecting various locations where stagnant water can accumulate, including:

- Residential areas

- Vacant plots

- Construction sites

- Commercial establishments

- Educational institutions

- Hospitals

Fines are being imposed on commercial establishments and building owners when mosquito breeding sources are identified.

GCC Appeals to Chennai Residents

The Greater Chennai Corporation has urged residents to cooperate with dengue prevention actitivities and ensure that water does not stagnate in and around their homes.

Residents are advised to regularly check water containers, flower pots, rooftops, discarded items and other areas where stagnant water can accumulate.

The intensified mosquito control measures are aimed at reducing mosquito breeding and strengthening dengue prevention and fever surveillance across Chennai.
