Chennai Port–Maduravoyal Double-Decker Flyover Work Gains Momentum; Completion Target Set for November 2027

Construction of the Chennai Port–Maduravoyal double-decker flyover is progressing rapidly, with authorities accelerating work to achieve the revised completion deadline of November 2027.

The 21-km elevated corridor, being developed at an estimated cost of ₹5,770 crore, is one of Chennai`s largest road infrastructure projects. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion by separating freight movement from regular city traffic and improving connectivity between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal.

Two-Level Flyover to Separate Freight and City Traffic

The elevated corridor has been designed as a double-decker flyover from Chennai Port to Koyambedu. The upper deck will feature a six-lane carriageway exclusively for container trucks and freight vehicles travelling to and from Chennai Port. The lower deck will provide a four-lane signal-free road for public and local traffic.

From Koyambedu to Maduravoyal, the corridor will continue as a single-level elevated flyover along the median of Poonamallee High Road.

13 Dedicated Entry and Exit Ramps

To improve accessibility and ensure smooth traffic flow, the project includes 13 ramps on the lower deck, comprising seven entry ramps and six exit ramps.

Entry and exit points are planned at key locations, including:

- Koyambedu
- Sivananda Salai
- Spur Tank Road
- College Road

Separate access lanes are also being constructed at Sivananda Salai and College Road, while dedicated exit lanes at Kamarajar Salai and Spur Tank Road will allow motorists to join or leave the elevated road without disrupting through traffic.

The flyover begins near Gate No. 10 of Chennai Port, close to Napier Bridge, follows the Cooum River, passes through Koyambedu, and ends at the Maduravoyal Junction.

Construction Work Accelerated After Monsoon Delays

Construction is currently underway at a 64-acre casting yard near Chembarambakkam, where large concrete pillars and box girders are being manufactured.

Officials said girder installation, originally scheduled for completion by May this year, was delayed due to the northeast monsoon and adverse weather conditions. Work is now being carried out for 11 hours daily—five hours during the day and six hours at night. Authorities plan to increase construction activity to 16 hours a day to speed up the project.

Installation of girders for the first level has already begun, with major construction progressing along the Cooum River.

Flyover Expected to Ease Chennai Traffic

Nearly 15 km of the 21-km corridor will run as a double-decker structure along the Cooum riverbank.

After completion, heavy container trucks travelling to Chennai Port will use the dedicated upper deck, reducing freight traffic on city roads. The lolower deck will provide a signal-free route for motorists travelling between Central Chennai, Koyambedu, and Maduravoyal, significantly reducing travel time.

Officials estimate that the flyover will initially accommodate around 20,000 local vehicles and 5,500 heavy vehicles every day. By 2047, daily local traffic is expected to exceed 52,000 vehicles.

The project has also been planned to support Chennai Port`s projected cargo handling capacity of 200 million tonnes annually by 2047, making it a vital transport corridor for both freight logistics and urban mobility in the years ahead.
