Tamil Nadu Sets New Record with Daily Power Consumption Crossing 475 Million Units

Tamil Nadu has recorded a new all-time high in daily electricity consumption, with power usage crossing 475 million units for the first time in the history of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL).

According to official data, the state`s daily power consumption reached 475.447 million units on Friday, setting a new record for electricity usage.

Typically, Tamil Nadu experiences peak electricity demand during the summer months of April and May, when temperatures are at their highest. Earlier this year, on April 29, the state recorded a peak power demand of 21,307 MW and daily power consumption of 471.456 million units, which was the previous record.

However, the below-normal southwest monsoon, coupled with prolonged dry weather and unusually high temperatures during July, has led to a sustained increase in electricity demand across the state.

As a result, on Thursday, Tamil Nadu`s peak power demand crossed 21,700 MW for the first time, setting another milestone. The following day, daily power consumption rose to 475.447 million units, surpassing the previous summer record.

Despite the unprecedented demand, TNPDCL successfully managed the state`s electricity supply without major disruptions. Officials attributed this achievement primarily to the strong contribution from renewable energy sources.

On average, around 150 million units of electricity per day were generated from wind and solar power and supplied to the grid. Notably, during July, wind power generation exceeded 100 million units on more than 15 days, marking a first for the state.

Meanwhile, officials said that electricity demand is expected to decline gradually in the coming days, as the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast widespread rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu, which is likely to bring down temperatures and reduce power consumption.
