Tamil Nadu Makes Physical Education Classes Mandatory for Students of Classes 6 to 12
The Tamil Nadu government has made it mandatory for all schools, including private institutions, to conduct physical education classes for students studying in Classes 6 to 12 from the current academic year.
The School Education Department has issued detailed guidelines to ensure the proper implementation of physical education periods across schools. The move comes after reports that several private schools had reportedly used physical education periods for academic coaching and special classes instead of sports activities.
Officials have instructed district physical education inspectors to identify schools with unused playgrounds and submit reports immediately. Schools have also been directed to provide special sports training after school hours for students interested in various sports disciplines.
Additionally, authorities have been asked to identify and encourage schools that have achieved success in state-level and national-level sports competitions, aiming to strengthen sports culture and student participation across Tamil Nadu.
