TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has been getting many complaints about call dropping. To check this problem, the telecom watchdog will launch a consultation paper. This would help come up with a better solution for the issue.

Talking about this, a TRAI official said, We are coming out with a consultation paper on call drops. We will consult all the stakeholders on the various facets of call drops. (We are) also examining whether there are any tariff plans of the service providers wherein call drops actually incentivise or benefit the companies. We have called for the information from the companies.

The Department of Telecom had suggested to TRAI to come up with a better mechanism to check call drops. The mechanism should also check if there are tariff plans by operators that incentivise call drops. Telecom operators, on the other hand, have denied that these drops are deliberate. They say that the problem is due to mobile towers and spectrums. According to one operator, they do not earn money if calls are dropped because 95% of the plans are second based.

The Telecom Department has said that the plans in which customers get free minutes and the billing is minute based will give the operators more money if the call is dropped. The Department feels that this has to be examined further.

The government has come back strongly saying that it is the responsibility of the operators to meet standards and that it is their basic service obligation. The government has said that problems with spectrum and mobile towers have existed in the past as well.
