Aadi Amavasai 2026: Thousands Gather Across Tamil Nadu for Pitru Tharpanam

Thousands of devotees gathered at beaches, river banks and other water bodies across Tamil Nadu on Wednesday to perform traditional ancestral rituals known as Pitru Tharpanam on Aadi Amavasai, the new moon day dedicated to honouring departed ancestors.

Major pilgrimage destinations, including Rameswaram and Kanyakumari, witnessed large crowds. Devotees also gathered along the Chennai coast, Cauvery River and Thamirabarani River to perform ancestral rituals and offer prayers.

Huge Crowds at Rameswaram

At Agni Theertham in Rameswaram, thousands of pilgrims from various districts of Tamil Nadu as well as neighbouring states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, arrived early in the morning.

Devotees performed Pinda Tharpanam, offering sesame and rice balls to their ancestors, before taking a holy dip in the sea at Agni Theertham. Many devotees also visited the 22 sacred Theerthams inside the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple.

More than 500 police personnel were deployed to manage the crowds and ensure the safety of pilgrims. Coastal security police also conducted intensive patrols in the sea to prevent accidents.

Aadi Amavasai Rituals at Kanyakumari

At Triveni Sangamam in Kanyakumari, where the three seas meet, devotees from Tamil Nadu and Kerala began gathering as early as 4 am.

Large crowds continued to visit the beach throughout the morning. Police personnel were deployed to regulate the movement of devotees and maintain safety in the area.

Thamirabarani River Banks See Heavy Footfall

In Tirunelveli district, thousands of devotees gathered along the banks of the Thamirabarani River from the early hours of the day.

The steps at Kurukkuthurai Subramaniya Swamy Temple, Esakki Amman Temple and the holy ghats in front of Papanasanathar Temple in Papanasam witnessed heavy crowds for Pitru Tharpanam and other ancestral rituals.

To ensure smooth movement, police implemented one-way traffic arrangements at key locations. Local civic bodies and volunteers also worked to keep the areas clean by collecting plastic bags from devotees and providing eco-friendly paper bags instead.

Aadi Amavasai Celebrations in Chennai

In Chennai, large crowds gathered at Marina Beach and the Mylapore Kapaleeswarar Temple tank from the early morning hours to perform ancestral rituals.

The traditional observance of Aadi Amavasai is considered especially significant for offering prayers and performing rituals for departed ancestors.

According to Tamil customs, Amavasai days falling during the Tamil months of Aadi, Thai and Purattasi are considered important for ancestral rituals. As per the Tamil calendar, the month of Aadi is currently being observed.

Solar Eclipse Did Not Affect Rituals in Tamil Nadu

Astrologers clarified that a solar eclipse occurred late Wednesday night in Indian Standard Time (IST) and was not visible in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, there were no eclipse-related restrictions on Aadi Amavasai rituals for devotees in the State.

The large gatherings across Tamil Nadu reflected the continued importance of Aadi Amavasai, Pitru Tharpanam and ancestral worship in Tamil traditions.
