Chennai Property Tax Collection Crosses ₹2,000 Crore; 75% Residents Pay Online

Greater Chennai Corporation has reported a significant rise in online property tax payments, with nearly 75% of residents now paying taxes through digital platforms.

Officials said the civic body’s property tax revenue has increased steadily over the years, with collections rising by ₹8 crore compared to the previous financial year. Property tax remains one of the major revenue sources for the Chennai Corporation.

According to data released by the Corporation, tax collection across 200 wards in 15 zones reached ₹2,042 crore during the 2025–26 financial year. For the current financial year, tax collection between April and May 13 alone stood at ₹547 crore.

Residents are now increasingly using online payment methods including the official corporation website, WhatsApp services, and QR code facilities to pay property tax conveniently without visiting zonal offices.

Officials also stated that notices are being issued to pending taxpayers and collections are continuing along with penalties for delayed payments.

The Corporation has set a target of collecting ₹2,200 crore in property tax during the next collection phase, which is scheduled to begin in October 2026 and continue until March 31, 2027.

Authorities say the growing shift toward digital tax payments is helping improve revenue collection efficiency and reducing the need for direct physical transactions.
