Cyclone Montha Likely to Form on Oct 27: Heavy Rain Alert for Chennai

Posted on: 24/Oct/2025 2:37:50 PM

The northeast monsoon has begun, bringing widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu. Several districts are experiencing heavy rain, while others are receiving moderate showers. With increasing inflow, water levels in major dams are rising and surplus water release has begun in some regions.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27. Although the system is expected to move towards Andhra Pradesh, IMD has warned that Chennai may receive heavy rainfall during this period.

If the system develops into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Montha’, as recommended by Thailand. Cyclone names are provided from a list submitted by countries in the region.

Over the last two days, an atmospheric circulation has persisted over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea. As of 5:30 am today, this circulation has developed into a low-pressure area, marking the second low-pressure system of this northeast monsoon season.

According to IMD:

- The low-pressure area will intensify into a deep depression within 24 hours.
- It is likely to strengthen further into a cyclonic storm on October 27 in the central Bay of Bengal.

While the potential cyclone’s movement indicates a likely landfall near Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu - especially Chennai - may experience intense rainfall as the system approaches the coast.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions during heavy rain alerts.
