The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a new low-pressure area in the southeast Bay of Bengal.
According to the IMD, the deep depression that existed off the Tamil Nadu coast has weakened as of yesterday morning and moved towards south Karnataka. Meanwhile, the depression in the southeast Arabian Sea is gradually moving northwestwards and is expected to continue northward and northwestward today.
An atmospheric circulation over the south Andaman Sea and adjacent areas has led to the formation of this new low-pressure area in the southeast and central east Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move westward and northwestward towards the Tamil Nadu coast within the next 24 hours and may strengthen further.
Moderate rains accompanied by thunder and lightning are expected at several places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today and tomorrow. Rainfall is likely to continue until October 29. Heavy rainfall is forecast in select districts including Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tirupattur, Vellore, and Ranipet today.
