Chennai Railway Division Achieves ₹1,290 Crore Freight Revenue in 2025 - 26

The Chennai Division of Southern Railway has reported an impressive freight revenue of ₹1,289.78 crore for the financial year 2025–26, reflecting strong growth in cargo operations and logistics expansion.

Expansion of Freight Services

During the year, the division introduced new freight segments, including the movement of steel pipes from Chennai Harbour to Ponmalai, enhancing industrial cargo connectivity. It also entered the electric vehicle logistics segment, transporting consignments from Tada and Jolarpettai to destinations in the Northeast Frontier Railway zone.

Growth in Container and Logistics Operations

The division strengthened its container traffic by initiating services for the Central Warehousing Corporation, with cargo movement from Korukkupet to Noli (Delhi Division).

Additionally, Truck-on-Train (ToT) services were successfully operated, transporting 430 trucks from Singaperumalkoil to Farukhnagar, showcasing efficient multimodal logistics solutions.

Revival of Key Cargo Streams

After a gap of 14 months, limestone transportation from Kamarajar Port was resumed. Consignments were sent to major industrial destinations such as Toranagallu and Mecheri Road, marking a significant revival in bulk cargo movement.

Infrastructure Development Boost

To support growing freight demand, the division commissioned its second Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Anuppampattu near Ponneri. The terminal handled its first rake of 45 wagons, covering a distance of 1,389 km to a private freight terminal under the South Eastern Railway zone.
