Chennai Egmore Redevelopment to Affect EMU, MEMU & Express Train Services Till August 30

Southern Railway has announced temporary changes to several EMU, MEMU, and express train services operating from Chennai Egmore Railway Station between August 5 and August 30, 2026, to facilitate the construction of a new Foot Over Bridge (FOB) as part of the station redevelopment project.

Under the revised schedule, nine express trains will either originate from or terminate at Tambaram, while one express service will terminate at Mambalam instead of Chennai Egmore.

The Ahmedabad–Tiruchchirappalli Weekly Special will also be diverted on select days via Renigunta, Tiruttani, Melpakkam, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu, bypassing its regular stoppages at Arakkonam, Perambur, Chennai Egmore, and Tambaram.

EMU and MEMU Services to be Cancelled

Suburban commuters will experience significant disruptions during the final phase of the Foot Over Bridge construction, scheduled from August 22 to August 30.

On weekdays:

- Three late-night Chennai Beach–Tambaram EMU services will be fully cancelled.

- Five additional EMU services will be partially cancelled between Chennai Beach and Tambaram.

On Sundays:

- Five EMU services will be completely cancelled.

- Three other services will operate only on partial sections of the affected route.

Passengers are advised to check the revised timetable before planning their journey.

Reason for the Temporary Train Service Changes

According to Southern Railway officials, the first phase of the Foot Over Bridge construction, covering the stabling line and Platforms 1 to 5, has already been completed.

The second phase is currently in progress across Platforms 6 to 8, while the final phase will extend from Platforms 9 to 11A towards the new parcel office building. These infrastructure works require temporary changes to train operations to ensure passenger safety and enable uninterrupted construction.

Southern Railway has requested passengers to take note of the revised train schedules and plan their travel accordingly. Station announcements and passenger assistance will be provided throughout the period of the temporary service changes.
