Flight ticket prices from Chennai to several domestic destinations have skyrocketed as thousands of people rush to their hometowns to cast their votes in the upcoming elections. The sudden spike in demand has led to overcrowding at the Chennai domestic airport and a sharp increase in airfares.

Since the previous night, the Chennai airport has witnessed an unusual surge in passenger traffic, especially on routes to cities like Thoothukudi, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, and Salem. Most flights on these routes were fully booked, leaving very limited ticket availability.

Airfares saw a massive jump compared to regular prices. Chennai to Thoothukudi fares increased from around ₹5,354 to ₹17,527, while Chennai to Madurai rose from ₹6,670 to ₹13,320. Similarly, Chennai to Tiruchirappalli fares surged from ₹3,677 to ₹14,237, Chennai to Coimbatore from ₹4,634 to ₹16,339, and Chennai to Salem from ₹3,319 to ₹12,027. Indirect routes via Bengaluru recorded even higher fares.

Despite the steep increase in ticket prices, many passengers chose to travel without hesitation, prioritizing their right to vote. However, a large number of travelers were left disappointed due to sold-out flights.

The surge highlights how election travel demand can significantly impact airfare pricing, especially when bookings are made at the last minute and flight availability is limited.
