Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Heavy Rain Forecast in 21 Districts, Chennai to Receive Showers

Tamil Nadu is likely to continue receiving rain on Monday as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in 21 districts across the state.

The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Madurai, Cuddalore, Tirupattur, Vellore and Tiruchirappalli are expected to receive heavy showers.

Chennai Rain Forecast

Chennai is also likely to experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorms on Monday. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 35–36°C.

Rainfall is expected to gradually decrease across most parts of Tamil Nadu from Tuesday. However, the Western Ghats may continue to receive moderate rainfall. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Ranipet could experience isolated light to moderate showers on Wednesday and Thursday.

Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure System

The weather system developed over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas and is moving west-northwestward towards the Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify into a depression on Monday and a deep depression on Tuesday, before moving towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast around Wednesday.

The system has already contributed to widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu.

On Sunday, Bettamkollam in Krishnagiri recorded 15 cm of rainfall, while Thirukkanur in Puducherry and Marandahalli in Dharmapuri recorded 12 cm each. Pulipatti in Madurai received 10 cm.

Kerala Rain Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast heavy rain in parts of Kerala over the next four days, along with isolated thunderstorms. Kerala recorded a 28% rainfall deficit between June 1 and September 17, according to IMD data.
