An Important request to the Chennai residents from the Metro Water Dept now!!
It is peak summer now and bore wells have started to dry up in many tenements and apartment complexes etc in Chennai city. In this scenario, the Metro water dept has asked the residents to use the water wisely. The main reason for this is to avoid strain on the resources.
Information gathered is that the water manager in Chennai has been supplying 10.86 MLD or million litres of water per day by means of a dedicated pipeline. The water is received by the tenements built by TNUHDB, TNHB and CMRL etc. Private apartments plus central govt and state govt quarters etc also receive the water.
Two major consumers of metro water in Chennai are the tenements of Urban Habitat Development Board and TN Housing Board.
The tenements as well as housing board apartments etc had bore wells and water from the bore wells was used for cleaning vehicles, for gardening etc. This was before the summer season began. Most of the borewells present in the tenements and apartments have dried up in April month.
As a result, the residents have been using water supplied by Metro Water for gardening, vehicle cleaning etc. Metro Water has been supplying drinking water after treating and adding value to it. This was revealed by a Metro Water dept senior officer.
He spoke about how supplying water by means of a dedicated pipeline would be superb as all the residents would get water no matter where they reside in the apartment complex. It must be noted that in the street supply residents living at the tail end of the street would face issues regarding poor water supply.
Point is that the metro water dept has asked the residents to use water judiciously and not use water for non-cooking and non-drinking purposes. The officers from Metro Water dept concluded that getting a dedicated water connection was an expensive one due to its huge cost. It is worth noting that a separate pipeline would have to be laid for those who have opted for a dedicated line. This was as per some sources.
