Aadi Perukku festival and its significance

The Tamil Month of Aadi:
The Tamil calendar month of Aadi is considered to be a supremely sacred month for the Tamil Hindus. Most families avoid non-veg items preparation and remain as vegetarians throughout this month. Grand festivals are celebrated especially in the temples of Lord Muruga, Goddess Amman, and Andal, the Viashnavite saint.

Aadi Perukku:
Aadi Perukku is one of the famous festivals celebrated in this month. It signifies the advent of the monsoon season as a symbol of prosperity. It is celebrated on the 18th day of Aadi month. Because of this, it has acquired another name Padhinettam Perukku.

The main intent - paying obeisance to Mother Nature:
Grand festivals are celebrated and special pooja are performed on the deities of Goddess Amman in various temples all over the state. Goddess Amman is considered as the representative of Mother Nature who has given the humanity with peace, prosperity, happiness apart from her bounty of crops, grains, and vegetables and fruits. Thus, Aadi Perukku represents the thanks expressed by the humans on Mother Nature and Goddess Amman. On the farming front, various important activities such as rooting, sowing, and planting of seeds and the other forms of vegetation. As a part of the worship of Mother Nature, all the perennial rivers are also worshipped and grand pooja are performed on the river banks.

The celebration:
The festival is more important for the newly-weds. Rangolis or Kolams, in various geometrically perfect shapes, sizes, and colours are made in front of each house welcoming the Goddess or Mother Nature. The front doorway is decorated with the mango tree leaves. Special pooja is performed followed by special meals including some sweet, special mixed rice items and savouries.

The Essence:
Aadi Perukku is considered as the ideal occasion to worship Mother nature, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna and the Goddess Amman.
