Onam is a most important festival to the people in Kerala. They believe that King Mahabali visits the state on this special day and that Onam is a celebration of this visit. The very first month of Malayalam calendar called the Kollamvarsham is when the festival is celebrated. This month is referred to as the Chingam. Onam is generally a ten days long festival of which the first (Atham) and last days (Thiruonam) are most importantly celebrated. Since 1961, Onam is regarded as the national festival of Kerala.
The story of Onam
According to what is widely believed, the period of demon king Mahabali was golden period in Kerala. People all over were very happy and prosperous. Mahabali however was egoistic which was his shortcoming. Utilizing this, the gods decided to terminate his period, as his reign was challenging to them. The god offered Mahabali a blessing that for all the good deeds he has done and for his attachment towards the people, he will be able to visit earth for once in a year which is now being celebrated as Onam. People strive to make their king Mahabali happy by celebrating the day the best way possible.
