India’s Ageing Population Needs Integrated Senior Living and Care: ASLI Report

Chennai, September 29, 2026: The Association of Senior Living India (ASLI) has released Silver Surge 2.0  From Places to Care: Building India`s Senior Care Continuum, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen senior living and care infrastructure across India.

India’s 60+ population is estimated at 166.9 million in 2026 and is projected to reach around 347 million by 2050. However, organised senior living penetration remains at just 1.5%, while assisted living accounts for less than 10% of organised senior living stock.

The report notes that around 8.8 million seniors are living with dementia, while 12.2% of seniors require supportive or palliative care. It identifies six key areas of care: wellness and chronic care, home care, assisted living, rehabilitation, memory care, and palliative and end-of-life care.

ASLI also highlights workforce and financing challenges, with 75% of surveyed providers identifying caregiver training as a priority and 67% calling for increased funding.

The report introduces the S.C.A.L.E. framework, covering Standards & Policy, Capital & Financing, Assisted & Continuum Care, Labour & Workforce, and Enabling Technology, with 14 recommended actions for 2026–27.

The report concludes that India`s ageing ecosystem must move beyond building senior homes to creating an integrated system that provides independence, quality care and dignity throughout the ageing journey.
