Chennai Corporation Plans Landmark Public Plaza Near Omandurar Government Estate

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to develop a landmark public plaza in front of the Omandurar Government Estate on Anna Salai, aiming to transform the busy Chepauk area into a modern, pedestrian-friendly public space.

To take the project forward, the Corporation has invited tenders to appoint a private consultant for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The selected consultant will be responsible for designing the public plaza and preparing a long-term management and maintenance plan for the project.

According to the tender document, the proposed plaza is strategically located near several important landmarks, including the University of Madras, Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital, M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Kalaivanar Arangam, Chennai MRTS Station, and Marina Beach.

Despite witnessing heavy pedestrian movement every day, the area currently faces several urban challenges, including discontinuous footpaths, wide carriageways, and a lack of dedicated public gathering spaces. The proposed project aims to improve walkability, enhance public convenience, and create an attractive urban space for residents and visitors.

The consultant will prepare the Detailed Project Report, including the design, infrastructure requirements, and maintenance strategy. As per the tender conditions, the DPR is expected to be completed within two months from the date of signing the agreement.

The proposed public plaza is expected to improve pedestrian connectivity, enhance the city`s public infrastructure, and provide a vibrant open space in one of Chennai`s busiest civic corridors.
