Chennai Metro Ridership Growth Sparks Demand for More Parking at Phase II Stations

As Chennai Metro Rail ridership continues to grow month after month, commuters are calling for larger and better parking facilities at both existing and upcoming Metro stations across the city.

With Chennai Metro Phase II sections expected to begin commercial operations soon, passengers say adequate parking for two-wheelers and four-wheelers will be essential to encourage more people to use Metro services.

Growing Need for Metro Parking in Chennai

Many daily commuters, particularly office-goers, depend on personal vehicles to reach their nearest Metro station before continuing their journey by train. As Metro usage increases, parking facilities are therefore becoming an important part of Chennai`s public transport infrastructure.

Neelakandan, an IT professional, said that improving public transport alone is not enough and that efficient, functional parking facilities are equally important for commuters.

He noted that Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) should consider growing parking demand at both operational and upcoming stations.

Parking Concerns at Porur and Vadapalani

Commuters have raised concerns about parking arrangements at some Phase II stations. The parking facility planned at the upcoming Porur Metro station is reportedly considered too small to meet potential demand.

At Vadapalani`s Phase II Metro station, commuters have also expressed concern over the availability of dedicated parking facilities.

With passengers anticipating Metro connectivity between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani, demand for parking is expected to rise, particularly among commuters using two-wheelers and cars.

Vadapalani resident Jayalakshmi said larger parking areas could help CMRL attract more passengers and make Metro travel more convenient.

CMRL to Assess Parking Demand

According to a CMRL official, parking spaces could be increased or allocated based on commuter demand. However, the actual requirement is expected to be assessed after commercial operations begin.

As Chennai Metro Phase II expands the city`s rapid transit network, adequate parking facilities could play a significant role in improving last-mile connectivity and encouraging commuters to shift from road-based travel to Metro Rail.
