Supreme Court Extends TET Passing Deadline Till 2028; Big Relief for Teachers

In a major relief for teachers across India, the Supreme Court has extended the deadline for clearing the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) until August 31, 2028. The decision comes as a huge relief to thousands of teachers who are currently working in schools without passing the mandatory TET examination.

The Supreme Court dismissed multiple review petitions that sought relaxation in the compulsory TET qualification rule. However, while rejecting the pleas, the court considered the difficulties faced by teachers and granted an additional extension for clearing the examination.

The court clearly stated that passing the Teacher Eligibility Test remains mandatory for all teachers, including those already working in schools and those seeking promotions or new appointments in the education sector. Around 70 review petitions were reportedly filed by state governments, teacher associations, organizations, and individual teachers requesting changes in the earlier order.

Despite refusing to change the rule, the Supreme Court acknowledged the concerns raised by teachers and extended the deadline from August 31, 2027, to August 31, 2028.

As per reports, teachers who are set to retire within the next five years may receive exemption from the TET requirement. Other teachers must qualify in the examination within the given time period to continue their service without issues.

The court observed that enforcing the TET qualification rule would help improve teaching quality and strengthen educational standards across schools in India.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has already announced plans to conduct special Teacher Eligibility Test examinations for in-service teachers. The special TET exams are expected to be held three times in 2026 — during January, July, and December — giving teachers multiple opportunities to clear the exam before the final deadline.

The latest Supreme Court verdict is expected to benefit thousands of teachers, especially in Tamil Nadu, where many teachers have been serving in schools for several years without clearing the TET examination. The extension provides them additional time to protect their jobs, salary benefits, promotions, and service continuity.
