Affordable Heart Screening: Omandurar Hospital Introduces CT Calcium Scoring Test for Rs 500
In a major boost to preventive cardiac care, the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital (TNGMSSH), Omandurar Estate, has launched the CT Calcium Scoring test - an advanced heart screening procedure now available to the public at a nominal cost of ₹500.
Dr. J. Cecily Mary Majella, Professor and Head of Cardiology, explained that the test helps assess calcium buildup in arteries, a key indicator of heart health. “If the calcium score is below 400, it’s normal; above 1,000 indicates severity and may require an angiogram. However, even a nil score doesn’t completely rule out cardiac issues,” she said.
Unlike private hospitals charging around ₹5,000, the government facility offers this quick, non-invasive, two-minute test at an affordable rate, making it accessible to more people. The test is especially useful for young and middle-aged individuals, among whom heart-related problems are on the rise.
The hospital, which already conducts comprehensive health check-ups for ₹1,000–₹4,000, has added this screening to promote early detection and prevention.
“This initiative brings advanced cardiac screening within reach of the common man,” Dr. Majella noted. “Our goal is to shift focus from treatment to prevention - because saving lives begins with timely screening.”
Public response has been highly positive, with many appreciating the government’s move to make high-end cardiac diagnostics affordable and accessible to all.
