The Director of the Southern Region of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), S. Balachandran, has informed that a low-pressure zone is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on the 7th of May (Sunday) and is expected to intensify into a cyclone by the same day.

In this regard, he stated:

"There is a possibility of the formation of a cyclonic system in the upper layers of the atmosphere over the South Bay of Bengal on the 6th of May. This is likely to develop into a depression zone on the 7th of May and further strengthen into a strong depression zone on the 8th of May. It is anticipated that it will continue to intensify and transform into a cyclonic system by the 9th of May.

Subsequently, this cyclonic system may move northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal. Whether Tamil Nadu will experience rainfall due to this system will be communicated in the coming days.

Currently, the easterly winds and the westerly winds are converging in the lower layers of the atmosphere over South India. There is a cyclonic system in the upper layers of the atmosphere over North Tamil Nadu.

As a result, there is a possibility of mild to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder in some areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikkal on the 4th and 5th of May, and chances of mild to moderate rainfall on the 6th and 7th of May."
