Sensational news!! Mandous the 13th Cyclone to cross near Chennai in the last 122 years!!

Posted on: 10/Dec/2022 10:30:44 AM
As the cyclone Mandous that brought up to 10cms of rain and winds at 65kmph to 75 kmph, gusts touching 85kmph crossed the ECR at Mamallapuram near Chennai on Friday night, there is silence now. No major loss of life or property has been reported till now.

It would take about 5 hours for the landfall process to get completed and the system to completely move over the land. This was as per the IMD. The sensational piece of information is that Mandous became the 13thh cyclone to cross near Chennai in the last 122 years.  Point is that when the cyclonic storm had begun to cross the coast (when confirmed by the IMD), the rains stopped for some time and winds speeds increased on Friday late evening.

Mr. S. Balachandran, RMC, Chennai mentioned that the cyclonic storm would continue to go in the NW direction towards Thiruvannamalai and then weaken into a deep depression. He added 3 hours after the rainfall  the system would weaken into a deep depression and then to a depression. It would then emerge over the Arabian Sea and it would take another 2 days..

Interior districts belonging to north TN, parts of Rayalaseema and southern parts of Karnataka would receive rainfall on 10th December. This would be due to the weather systems inland journey. From Saturday morning, the strong winds felt over the coastal areas would lose speeds and would dissipate by the afternoon.  On Friday, the cyclone Mandous weakened into a cyclone is known. The rains came back in the afternoon after some break in the morning yesterday.

In the evening, the intensity of the rains increased and in Chennai and its suburbs there were steady intense rains. It must be noted that the Chennai city S band radar was tracking the cyclone as it neared the coast.
